My Sister's Keeper

This is the first novel I've read by Jodi Picoult (and my first book review since college, so have patience with me!).

Anna is a 13 year old girl who is seeking for medical emancipation from her parents. She was conceived as the first "designer baby" to be a genetic match for her older sister who suffers from leukemia. She has always undergone countless procedures and tests in an effort to save her sister's life. She has hired a lawyer and will fight for her right to be heard and her wishes acknowledged.

This was a gut-wrenching, funny, sad, and thought-provoking book that allowed me to "see" the story as it was alternately narrated by each of the main characters. It raises ethical, moral, and mostly personal questions one hopes to never have to answer. "If you use one of your children to save the life of another," the author asks,"are you being a good mother. . . or a very bad one?" This book made me smile, cry and cover my mouth with astonishment. The ending wasn't what I wanted or expected, but it had to happen the way it did. With its twists and turns, this book captivated me and wouldn't let go.

I'm ordering another of her books from Amazon now.

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorites! I get her books from the library. "My Sister's Keeper" is fantastic and it's coming to the big screen sometime this year. I also really liked "The Pact" and "19 Minutes". Let me know what you read next!

We read Plain Truth at the book club and it was pretty good. I also read Vanishing Acts, it was just OK. We are on the wait list to get enough copies of My Sister's Keeper for the book club, but I am anxious to read it after your review!
