After my grandfather died last year, my grandmother gave David and I permission to take the photo albums of my grandfathers’ mom dating back to 1902 with us to NC. Since that time, we have been taking pictures of her pictures. Included in all of this was my great-grandmothers baptismal certificate with a different middle name than what we knew. My grandfather’s brother, Jack, was killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. We were given permission to also take his box of memorabilia that the navy gave to his mom.

We were allowed to take them home to our house on two conditions:

1) Don’t tell my mom. We didn’t, but my grandmother did.
2) We had to promise that we’d forfeit our lives if anything happened to them. What a blessing is to get to “know” my great-uncle, my grandfather, and my great grandmother.

This is a picture of my great-uncle Jack. I wish I could have met him. I just found out that he was they only one who was killed on the USS Helena.
