Remembering My Uncle Jack

This year Memorial Day has touched me more than any other. I have been working on genealogy extensively and have grown to love my ancestors and have learned so much about them. I have had many relatives in the Military, even as far back as the Revolutionary War.

My Grandfathers brother, Jack Campbell, was killed in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was the only sailor killed on the USS Helena, being hit by bomb splinters. I wish I could have met him. I have pictures, documents, journal entries, and pictures of him being buried at Arlington under the presence of Pres. Truman, and everything I read and see makes me love this man more.

Death of a Young Hero

He did not die as some men die,
To noble deeds, to generous
And kindly impluses. The high
Romance of death, the glorious
Struggle of free men to stay free,
Was his. He died for Liberty.

He did not die as some men do,
A little at a time. They live
And are but half alive. He knew
He had one fair young life to give,
And gave it unreservedly,
As one whose goal is Liberty.

He did not die as some men creep
To unmourned graves in sin and shame,
His is an Honorable sleep;
His is an Honorable name.
He died for you, he died for me,
His Flag, his God, and Liberty.

By Anne Campbell

I am so grateful to all the service men and woman who serve our County and have given so much for my freedom. I will meet my great Uncle Jack one day. But until then, I will continue to honor him and what he died defending.

God Bless the USA!
